Jim Maki again came and chatted after his walk. Weather: Cloudy and gray to start, blue skies crept into view during the early afternoon, allowing some welcomed rays of sunshine to sneak through. Windy all day, there were gusts of up to 18 mph primarily out of the northeast. Raptor Observations: The morning produced only a Cooper's Hawk but once the sky began to clear, more raptors began to appear. Not many more, mind you, but certainly enough to hold our interest. Included among them was an adult peregrine falcon that flew in and perched on a bare branch a mere 300 yards from the count site and proceeded to remain perched there for more than an hour, offering up excellent scope views. The bird exhibited little in the way of migratory restlessness, though, and went uncounted. Non-raptor Observations: In the morning, there was a number of warblers in the trees near the count site, mainly cape mays but also a pine or two. A female wood duck sped by at one point and the first chimney swift of the season was seen late in the day. Predictions: It looks like it's going to be a lot like today except with a lesser chance of sun and a greater chance of rain. On the bright side, winds will be out of the north, so that's good. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Greg Norwood ([email protected]) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The primary site used by the Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and it's Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
