Hello,
Lise and I spent most of the day birding Amherst Island, great weather, sunny skies. On the walk out to the sand bar, we had Palm Warblers, Sanderlings, Least Sandpipers, a fly over of 4 Mute Swans. On the sand bar and immediate area, we had Vesper Sparrows, one American Bittern, Black-bellied Plovers, Semipalmated Plovers and a very good selection of American Golden Plovers, two of these birds still had approx. 85% of their breeding plumage intact. Also, there were Greater Yellowlegs, Least Sandpipers, one Semipalmated Sandpiper, Sanderlings, one Wilson Snipe and a White-rumped Sandpiper seen along the shoreline going out. Birds of prey consisted of a juvenile Merlin and a juvenile Northern Harrier. American Kestrels were numerous on the island, at one time, we seen as many as 8 kestrels in one group. Along the road into Owls Woods, we had 5 Eastern Towhees, all seen perched in a tree. Cheers, Brian Directions; Amherst Island is approx. 30 minutes west of Kingston and can be reached by ferry only from the Loyalist Parkway, leaving the mainland on the 1/2 hour and Amherst Island on the hour. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
