This morning Bill Smith and I had planned a visit to Toronto Islands to look
for migrating sparrows and at the last minute opted instead for Long Point.
We spent all our time from 9 until 1.30 on Hastings Rd. (which I incorrectly
called Holstein Rd. in my Monday posting) other than a quick trip to the
overflow park (which was empty) to look for Fox Sparrow. Following is a list
of the 60 species we found along this short dead- end road ;
Double-crested Cormorant - Pied-billed Grebe-Great Blur Heron - Turkey
Vulture - Canada Goose - Mute Swan - Wood Duck - American Widgeon - Mallard
- Northern Shoveler - Bald Eagle - Northern Harrier - Red-tailed Hawk -
American Kestrel - American coot - Ring-billed Gull-Herring Gull - Rock Dove
- Mourning Dove - Red-headed Woodpecker - Red-bellied Woodpecker -
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - Downey Woodpecker - Northern Flicker - Eastern
Phoebe - Blue Jay - American Crow - Black-capped Chickadee - Brown Creeper -
Winter Wren - Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned Kinglet - Eastern Bluebird -
Gray-cheeked and Hermit Thrush - American Robin - Gray Catbird - Brown
Thrasher - Cedar Waxwing - European Starling - Orange-crowned- Yellow-rumped
and Palm Warblers  - Eastern Towhee - American Tree - Chipping - Field -
Savannah - Song - Lincoln's - Swamp - White-throated and White-crowned
Sparrows - Dark-eyed Junco - Northern Cardinal - Red-winged Blackbird -
Common Grackle - Brown-headed Cowbird = American Goldfinch - House Sparrow.
We also saw huge flocks of 5000 plus mixed Black Birds on St. John's Rd.
just outside Simcoe.
Directions:Hastings Road runs west off the Causeway where it dead ends at
Lakeshore Rd. in front of the restaurant.
Weather overcast -  temperature 49 F - wind S.W. 10/15 Km.
