Weather: Some good cloud cover mixed with sunshine...moderate winds from the WSW for the day Raptor Observations: A small flight today of just 33 birds...mostly TVs (21)...with Harriers (4), Sharpies (4), Redtail (3)...and the lone highlight of the day a Golden Eagle. Non-raptor Observations: There isn't much foliage left at the Cliff or in the woodlots at the B&B, and with today's strong winds especially at the Cliff, it was a challenge to find any birds, raptors as well as non-raptors -- except for the many flocks of Tundra Swans totaling about 650. Most flocks contained 25 - 39 birds, but after a few hours they do add up and even though the swans were mostly at high altitudes, the light was perfect, providing spectacular views. Other highlights included a Belted Kingfisher, a lone Loon, and a flock of Horned Larks at the B&B. Crows were everywhere. As well, 5 Woodpecker species were spotted today including Downy, Hairy, Red-bellied and Pileated along Hawk Cliff Rd south of Dexter and a pair of Northern Flickers at the ridge. The only other highlight was a large mixed flock of Blackbirds (Red-winged, Rusty and Cowbird were seen) and Grackles in the woodlot across from Sharpie Alley. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.on.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
