We found the adult male Snowy Owl, as reported yesterday by Ron
Fleming, shortly after twelve noon today. As per Ron, it was west of
Jane St. and north of Woodchoppers Lane, and far enough away that it
was a little difficult event through the scope (which was shaking in
the wind).
It was a magnificent pure white male perched on the ground in a
lightly snow-covered field, not dissimilar, at a distance, to the
many upturned white buckets which litter the fields this time of year.
The bird was seen as we went northbound on Jane, and by looking
southwards from Edward Ave, but was not refound an hour later as we
came back west along Woodchoppers.
The northern shrike was briefly seen atop a tree a couple hundred
metres west of Keele St. on Woodchoppers Lane.
Directions: The Holland Marsh is north of Toronto near Bradford.
Woodchopper's Lane can be accessed most easily by taking Hwy. 400
north to the Canal Road interchange, and turning sharply south along
Wist Rd for a kilometre or so, then left on Woodchoppers. Or follow
Hwy 9 to the intersection with Keele St. and turn north on Keele,
then left on to Woodchoppers.
