Hi Ontbirders, We had a record count in Woodstock today with 70 species recorded. Our previous high was 67 species on two occasions. There are feeder counts still to come in so this is not yet finalized.
We had two new birds for the count: Sandhill Crane 46 - moving along the Thames River west of Woodstock (James Holdsworth and Bill Lindley) American Coot 1 - Pine Pond (Jeff Skevington). Other notable birds included: Tundra Swan 4 - Pittock Lake (James Holdsworth, Bill Lindley) - 3rd count Cackling Goose 3 - Thames River (1), Pittock Lake (2) (James Holdsworth, Bill Lindley, Jeff Skevington) - 5th count Green-winged Teal 1 - Pittock Lake (James Holdsworth, Jeff Skevington) - 6th count Wood Duck Count Week (Richard and Jeff Skevington) Ring-necked Duck 1 - Pittock Lake (James Holdsworth, Bill Lindley, Jeff Skevington) - 2nd count (previously in 1963) Red-breasted Merganser 1 - flying along Thames River (James Holdsworth, Bill Lindley) - 4th count Killdeer Count Week - Pittock Lake (James Holdsworth) Glaucous Gull Count Week - Pittock Lake (James Holdsworth) Red-shouldered Hawk 1 - migrating along Thames River (James Holdsworth, Bill Lindley) - 7th count Merlin 1 - Concession 15 near Hickson (Richard Skevington) - 8th count Carolina Wren 1 - near Beachville (James Holdsworth, Bill Lindley) - 7th count Rusty Blackbird 3 - 1 at east end of Pittock Lake and 2 at Nith River (Jeff Skevington) - 5th count New high counts included: Common Goldeneye 16 (previous high 8) Ring-billed Gull 7971 (previous high 5976) Northern Harrier 11 (previous high 6) Red-tailed Hawk 77 (previous high 76) Red-bellied Woodpecker 22 (ties high) American Crow 87,086 (previous high 69,888) Red-winged Blackbird 20 (previous high 10) Total Individuals 105860 (previous high 79,528) Total Species 70 (previous high 67 in 1991 and 2009) Finches: Pine Siskin 30 American Goldfinch 229 White-winged Crossbill 15 Purple Finch 2 House Finch 110 Thanks to all who participated.
