Good day This morning Ian Cannell and I went down to the Whitby harbour to look for the reported White-fronted geese and harlequin Duck reported earlier in the week.
Telescope recommended. Though we did not find the Harlequin Duck we did find the Cackling Goose to the east of the bridge and one of the White-fronted Geese on the west side of the harbour. Park on Gordon St. beside the hospital (first street west of the harbour) and cross the large parking lot to the boat launching area. We had to scan through approx. 1500 Canada geese (east and west of the bridge) and 17 other waterfowl species to find the White-fronted Goose but it finally paid off. We did not look for the second reported White-front. We did spot 8 probable newly arrived Pintail Ducks. Travelling some roads between Whitby and Newcastle we found N. Goshawk, A Robins, both Purple and House Finches, Red-bellied Woodpecker, 4 N. Flickers together, and N. Shrike Directions to Whitby Harbour. Exit Hwy 401 at exit 410 (Brock St.) and follow it south to the bridge.
