Tim McCarthy and I (with the help of Linda Wells and John Stirrat in
the morning) undertook 13 hours on todays watch, starting at 5:30 am
and ending at 6:30 pm.
We had fairly good luck on shorebird today, the best day so far for
Whimbrels with 769 in 18 flocks. They were highly concentrated in
the morning from 5:45 to 8:43 am (7 flocks totaling 303, the largest
of 180 at 5:45 am); then only one flock on 1:20 pm; a weak front went
though starting at 4:45 triggered a fallout of 9 more flocks totaling
466, the largest, 110 at 5:35 pm. There was also a large movement of
other shorebird species in the morning: Dunlin: 6 flocks totalling
55; Black-bellied Plover: flocks of 1 and 13; Semipalmated Plover: one
flock of 10; Sanderling: one flock of 40 mixed with 12 turnstones;
Ruddy Turnstone: flocks of 5, 1, 1, 7, 8 and 12; Semipalmated
Sandpiper: flocks of 11, 27, 8 and 6; peeps and unidentified
shorebirds: 10 flocks. There was a large movement of Canada Geese,
probably part of the moult migration: 8 flocks totaling 500 moving
from west to east. Today 18 Common Loons were seen. The count
continues until 30 May. Lastly, the bird festival is tomorrow between
8:00 am and noon.
Location: The park is located at the end of Kipling and south of
Lakeshore Boulevard. The parking lot is located at the end of Colonel
Samuel Smith Park Drive. If that parking lot is full, free parking is
allowed on 13th street which runs along the east side of the park.
