Don Barnett, Tim McCarthy and I spent 9.5 hours on site and only
recorded one flock of 9 Whimbrel (fly by at 7:00 am) and no other
migrant shorebirds were seen. Common Loons totaled 5. The watch
continues until 30 May but only very small number are expected.
The actual total for yesterday is 2284 instead of 2264 posted
yesterday; the total sum of whimbrels counted to date this year is
4268. The current Hudson Bay breeding population was recently
estimated at 17,000. Clearly this is a significant part of the
remaining population once estimated at 50,000 to 100,000.
In next few days we do expect small flocks of Dunlins, Turnstones,
Sanderlings and Semipalmated Sandpipers to stop and/or feeding on the
rocks and beach of the park and offer some KODAK moments. In woods
just east of the Bowl today I found one Eastern Wood-Peewee, 1 Great
Crested Flycatcher and one single male Blackburian Warbler as well as
several Blackpoll Warblers.
Location: The park is located at the end of Kipling and south of
Lakeshore Boulevard. The parking lot is located at the end of Colonel
Samuel Smith Park Drive. If that parking lot is full, free parking is
allowed on 13th street which runs along the east side of the park.
