After seeing the Red-necked Grebe chick be eaten by the fish Sue and I went crow hunting with Bill Crins. While Bill and I were chatting Sue said there is a crow in that tree being mobbed by blackbirds. It was not long before the crow started talking and Bill had his Fish Crow. This was at the corner of Jones and Marine. The crow soon flew off towards the lake.
At the grebe nest we saw three eggs. There had been four yesterday so it is possible (likely?) that one had hatched and been predated without anyone seeing. There is one additional egg that is not accounted for as there were seven eggs at one time. The other potential grebe nest that we reported has not progressed, i.e. no eggs but is still sometimes attended. This is across the street from OCs restaurant on Bronte at Marine. The Pied-billed Grebe that has been present in the harbour since the end of May continues. Directions: Exit the QEW at Bronte road and go to the lake. Jones is one block east of Bronte and Marine is between Lakeshore and Ontario. Ontario is beside the lake. The grebe nest is just east of the Compass restaurant. The area is served by Oakville Transit routes 2 and 14 from Bronte and Oakville GO stations respectively.
