My father Ron and I observed a Yellow-billed Cuckoo on Hwy 529 near the Naiscoot River, about 5 miles north of Pointe Au Baril, today. This species is rare in the District of Parry Sound. A Sandhill Crane was noted a couple of kilometres further north. Of equal surprise was our failure to observe even one Eastern Kingbird despite birding 5 1/2 hours birding in mostly suitable habitat. I had a similar experience on June 10 when I walked for 4 1/2 hours in the Rouge Valley of Scarborough and was able to find only one kingbird. Has anyone else noticed that this species is scarcer than usual?
