There was nothing very rare to report from the past week. Shorebirding continues to be enjoyable but the cohort of species in the region remains roughly the same as last it was week.
Amherstview Sewage Lagoons Shorebirds present this past week included SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, KILLDEER, SPOTTED, SEMIPALMATED, LEAST, PECTORAL and STILT SANDPIPERS, both YELLOWLEGS species, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER and WILSON'S PHALAROPE. BONAPARTE'S GULL numbers continued to build, topping out at about 100 on Wednesday. The waterfowl were CANADA GOOSE, MALLARD, NORTHERN SHOVELER, AMERICAN WIGEON, GADWALL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL and LESSER SCAUP. Newburgh area The release of several groups of captive bred LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES north of Newburgh along County Road 27 means that this species is easy to find. A high count of 11 free flying birds was made last weekend. Also of note in this area are lots of AMERICAN KESTRELS, 1 MERLIN, CLAY-COLOURED SPARROW, VESPER SPARROW, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW and the occasional UPLAND SANDPIPER. Other observations Charleston Lake is hosting 12 COMMON LOONS, 21 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, 13 CASPIAN TERNS and 4 COMMON TERNS; good counts for all species at this time of year. An adult LEAST BITTERN was feeding a fledgling along Carmen Creek near Enterprise. An UPLAND SANDPIPER was near Crosby. A MOURNING WARBLER was at Prince Edward Point. Thank you to those who contributed observations this week. All bird sightings reported to me are included in the Kingston Field Naturalists’s long term records database which has over 60 years of observations on file and is an invaluable conservation resource.
