To contact the Science Museum, call 896-5200. Highlights of reports received August 9 through August 16 from the Niagara Frontier Region. August 11, an early RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, one day only, on private property in Port Colborne, Ontario. A productive shorebird habitat temporarily emerged by a drained section of the Erie Canal in the Orleans County Town of Gaines, along Presbyterian Road in Knowlesville. A BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was the highlight on August 9 and 10, with numbers of SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, KILLDEER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, SEMIPALM. SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER and PECTORAL SANDPIPER, plus a passing PEREGRINE FALCON and PILEATED WOODPECKER. At the Batavia Waste Water Plant this week, four shorebird species - LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, SEMIPALM. SANDPIPER and LEAST SANDPIPER. August 11, early movement of warblers was noted by an immature MOURNING WARBLER and adult YELLOW-R. WARBLER at a yard pond near Lake Ontario in the Town of Wilson. Raptors on the move also - SHARP-SH. HAWK, AMERICAN KESTREL and MERLIN in southeast Cattaraugus County. And, a BARRED OWL this week in a Town of Elma yard.
