At Port Stanley Sewage Lagoons this afternoon, I had a juvenile Western Sandpiper and a flock of 8 Red-necked Phalaropes. Both were in the second pond from the east, which is the only one with any shorebird habitat right now. The Western Sandpiper was already beginning to molt into basic plumage, making it stand out a bit more from the juvenile Semipalmated Sandpipers that were also present.
Most of the shorebirds were feeding along the north shore of the lagoon, making them hard to see from the viewing stand through the vegetation. Port Stanley lagoons are NW of Port Stanley. From St. Thomas drive south on Cty Rd 4/ Hwy 4 and turn west on Warren Street / Cty Rd 21. Continue through Carlow Rd and drive up a steep and winding hill. Turn right on Scotch Line and follow this road to the lagoons on your left.
