No major rarities to report from this past week. A NORTHERN
MOCKINGBIRD at Amherst Island and a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER at the
Amherstview Sewage Lagoons were our best birds. Songbirds continue to
press south with widespread observations of migrant PHILADELPHIA
VIREO, BLACK-AND-WHITE, TENNESSEE, NASHVILLE, MAGNOLIA, BAY-BREASTED,
BLACKBURNIAN, CHESTNUT-SIDED, BLACKPOLL, BLACK-THROATED BLUE, PALM,
BLACK-THROATED GREEN, YELLOW (still a few here and there),
YELLOW-RUMPED and WILSON'S WARBLERS, AMERICAN REDSTART, NORTHERN
PARULA, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and SCARLET TANAGER.

City of Kingston
Lemoine Point Conservation Area hosted NORTHERN HARRIER, COOPER'S HAWK
and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.

Amherst Island
GADWALL, AMERICAN WIGEON, AMERICAN BLACK DUCK, BLUE-WINGED and
GREEN-WINGED TEALS, 1 REDHEAD, 1 GREATER SCAUP, COMMON MERGANSER, 2
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, 1 AMERICAN BITTERN, NORTHERN HARRIER,
SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, BLACK-BELLIED, AMERICAN GOLDEN and SEMIPALMATED
PLOVERS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SEMIPALMATED, PECTORAL and LEAST
SANDPIPERS, PEREGRINE FALCON, MERLIN, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, MARSH
WREN, AMERICAN PIPIT, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD,
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, CANADA WARBLER, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, PURPLE
FINCH were among the many species found on the island.

Amherstview Sewage Lagoons
WOOD DUCK, AMERICAN BLACK DUCK, BLUE-WINGED and GREEN-WINGED TEALS,
NORTHERN SHOVELER, NORTHERN PINTAIL, LESSER SCAUP and HOODED MERGASNER
were among the waterfowl at the lagoons. Shorebirds included
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, both YELLOWLEGS, SEMIPALMATED, LEAST, at least 1
BAIRD'S, PECTORAL and STILT SANDPIPERS and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. You
must be a Kingston Field Naturalists club member to access the
lagoons.

Opinicon Road
WOOD DUCK, RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, a singing EASTERN SCREECH-OWL, BARRED
OWL, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, OVENBIRD and PINE
WARBLER were all at Queen's University Biological Station. Two
LINCOLN'S SPARROWS were at Hebert's Bog. A SANDHILL CRANE flew over
Post Office Gate Lane.

Other Observations
A road-killed GREAT HORNED OWL was found near Battersea and an EASTERN
WHIP-POOR-WILL was heard singing from the same area. Two immature BALD
EAGLES were at the Elbow Lake Environmental Education Centre. The
Seeley's Bay area had GREEN HERON, SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, PURPLE FINCH
and 2 MERLINS. A COMMON RAVEN was on Garden Island.

Thank you to those who contributed observations this week. All bird
sightings reported to me are included in the Kingston Field
Naturalists’s long term records database which has over 60 years of
observations on file and is an invaluable conservation resource.
