Spent 5 hrs watching from Oshawa Second marsh (se corner barrier beach) and Bonniebrae point Like several other locations the birding was amazing. In addition the the lakewatch, there were migrating raptors and 100s of waterfowl in the Oshawa Second Marsh. Lake Ontario 5 Black-legged Kittiwakes all immatures 1 large bird sp. several Kms offshore gliding westward. It made me think Gannet/Pelican like. 1 Alcid sp. Jaegers: 3 Pomarine, 1 Parasitic, and 4 jaeger sp. 1 Tern sp. 3 Red Phalaropes in one flock moving eastward 62 Common Loons 3 Red-throated Loons 1 Pacific Loon moving between the east side of Oshawa Harbour and the east side of Oshawa Second Marsh. It was prefering to forage close to the mouth of Farewell Creek off the sw corner of Oshawa Second Marsh Horned and Red-necked Grebes 2086 Brant: 12 flocks( size 15- 580 birds) two of the flocks 210 and 216 birds came from the north over Oshawa Second Marsh and then hung a sharp left over Lake Ontario and continued eastward. 1 Eider Sp. Female moving eastward with a flock of White-winged Scoters 3 female Harlequins ducks All three Scoters 3000+ Red-breasted Mergansers 88 Migrating Raptors including 4 Golden Eagles, 1 Northern Goshawk. Flocks of Pine Siskins, Red and White-winged Crossbills and Snow Buntings moving along lakeshore In the marsh itself 15 species of waterfowl including Northern Pintails, Ruddy Ducks, Northern Shovelers and the Green-winged Teal are now down to approximately 400 birds. Shorebirds only Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs visible today. No interesting loafing gulls. Directions:
To Oshawa Second Marsh/ McLaughlin reserve Directions: Exit from the 401 at the Harmony Rd. Exit in Oshawa. Go south to Colonel Sam Drive. Go east on Colonel Sam Drive to the parking lot at the GM. Headquarters. Park in the nw parking lot closet to the marsh. The east platform is located here. To see the Lake Ontario waterbirds proceed along the path from the parking lot south to the lakeshore. Bonniebrae point Exit the 401 in Oshawa at Simcoe St. Follow Simcoe st south to Oshawa Harbour. Take a right onto Lakeview park Ave. On the west side of Lakeview park is Kluane ave. Turn left (south) on Kluane Ave. At the top of the hill there is a Parking lot on the south side. This is Bonniebrae point.
