Quebec Compiler & transcriber Bob Cermak [email protected] or [email protected] Dynamic weather conditions have contributed to a significant movement of birds from the north into the Ottawa/Gatineau area. BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE (3 all in 1st winter plumage) were seen from the end of Whistler Rd in Constance Bay flying east down the Ottawa River today. PURPLE SANDPIPER (1) was seen briefly on the rocks on the shore of the west end of Andrew Haydon Park and a flock of 9 were seen on and around the end of the Britannia pier at Lakeside Gardens on the 30th. The female TUFTED DUCK has not been reported since October 24th. The WESTERN GREBE, seen daily from the 16th to the 24th was last reported on the 28th in the middle of the Ottawa River just west of the Deschenes Rapids. Many flocks of all three SCOTERS (mostly males) continue to be seen along the Ottawa River. The exception was a flock of 103 female and 27 male BLACK SCOTERS seen yesterday. Also seen all week on the Ottawa River; small flocks of LONG-TAILED DUCK (up to 45), BRANT (up to 21), numerous HORNED and RED-NECKED GREBE, COMMON LOON and on the 31st an adult RED-THROATED LOON. Numbers of EVENING GROSBEAK, usually small flocks but up to 80 continue to be seen all over this area. WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL (up to 30) and BOHEMIAN WAXWING (flocks of 25+ and 100+) have been seen at a number of locations. A record (for this area) number of SANDHILL CRANE (148) were seen at the south end of Trim Rd on the 27th. Baie Noire Ouest west of Plaisance, Quebec continues to be excellent for many waterfowl species including EURASIAN WIGEON (2) and CANVASBACK (1) on the 27th Other interesting sighting were; - GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE (1) at Shirleys Bay on the 25th - BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER (2) in the Stony Swamp area and one female along the Rockcliffe Parkway on the 27th - PINE-GROSBEAK (1) flying over Hampton Park on the 27th - HORNED LARK (200+) and LAPLAND LONGSPUR (2) on Rushmore Rd on th 27th - LESSER BLACK-BACKED (2) and 1 each ICELAND, GLAUCOUS and THAYER'S GULLS at the St. Catherine Rd (south of route 400) dump east of Marvelville on the 27th Thanks to everyone who contributed bird observations - Good Birding! _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
