Hi Ontbirders: A few days ago, an 'interesting' duck was reported from the Rideau River in Ottawa just west of the Smythe Road bridge. It was conjectured that it might be a Black Scoter. I have lived near this area close to the river for 30 years and never seen a Black Scoter on the Rideau River as they have preferred the much larger Ottawa River when passing through in the fall. I went out this afternoon to find the duck still there and it is, indeed, a Black Scoter female. Good birding Peter Hall Directions: From Bank Street heading south in Ottawa, turn left on Sunnyside and follow it down to the Rideau River where you turn left on Rideau River Drive. The duck is along this stretch of river. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
