I had an Eared Grebe off Gibraltar Point on the Toronto Islands this evening. It was still fully in basic plumage as far as I could tell. It was initially very close to shore, but slowly swan further out.
Gavin Platt Toronto, ON Directions: Toronto Islands can only be reached by ferry The ferry leaves from the foot of Bay St. in Toronto. Ferry schedules can be found here: http://www.toronto.ca/parks/island/ferry-schedule.htm Gibraltar Point is the very southwestern point of the islands. It is more or less an equal distance from both the Centre Island and Hanlan's Point ferry docks. From Hanlan's Point, follow the main road south. After around 2 km, you will pass a pond on your left. A road branches off to Gibraltar Point just after the pond. There is a washroom building right at Gibraltar Point and from there is a good place to scan the lake. >From Centre Island, follow the main road southeast (left from the ferry), past the amusement park and over a bridge. You will see the Centre Island pier ahead. Turn right at the pier and follow the road past the Water Pumping Station and the Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts. A road branches off to the left towards Gibraltar as you come to a pond (around 2 km from the ferry dock). There is a washroom building right at Gibraltar Point and from there is a good place to scan the lake. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
