Highlights of reports received April 11 through April 18 from the Niagara Frontier Region include ROSS'S GOOSE, AMERICAN AVOCET, EURASIAN WIGEON, EARED GREBE and BL. AND W. WARBLER. April 15 and 16, a rare ROSS'S GOOSE at an unlikely location - Niagara Falls, among the gulls at Terrapin Point, at the northwest corner of Goat Island in Niagara Falls, New York. At the Batavia Waste Water Plant, April 13, two AMERICAN AVOCETS, the first April record of this species in the region. EURASIAN WIGEON reported again April 15 at Cinnamon Marsh in the Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area, while another EURASIAN WIGEON, April 14 to 16, on Chautauqua Lake, viewed from both Fluvanna Townline Road and Sunnyside Road, near Jamestown. A fallout of HORNED GREBES was widely reported this week. Locations included Lake Ontario, the Niagara River, Batavia Waste Water Plant, Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area marshes, and even in wetlands along the Amherst Bike Path. Among the HORNED GREBES, a reported seven EARED GREBES, April 14, on the Niagara River at Buckhorn Island State Park, and a single EARED GREBE, photographed on Lake Ontario at Niagara-Orleans Countyline Road. With 5 HORNED GREBES at LaSalle Lake on the UB North Campus, a single LONG-TAILED DUCK, BUFFLEHEADS and LESSER SCAUP. Warbler migration starting with an early BL. AND W. WARBLER April 11 at a feeder in Orchard Park. Also, on time warblers - PALM WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, YELLOW-R. WARBLER and BL.-THR. GREEN WARB. at several locations. Other widely reported arrivals this week - N. ROUGH-W. SWALLOW, RUBY-CR. KINGLET, BROWN THRASHER, CHIPPING SPARROWS replacing AMER. TREE SPARROWS, FIELD SPARROW, VESPER SPARROW, SWAMP SPARROW, WHITE-THR. SPARROW and PURPLE FINCH. Also, AMERICAN BITTERN at the Berry Road marsh in the Chautauqua County Town of Pomfret. And, PECTORAL SANDPIPER with GREATER YELLOWLEGS and LESSER YELLOWLEGS on Johnson Road in the Town of Shelby. BONAPARTE'S GULLS have returned to abundance on the upper and lower Niagara River. Over 11,000 BONAPARTE'S GULLS passing the Fort Niagara State Park boat launch the evening of April 12, with 50 LITTLE GULLS, 299 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and 1216 LONG-TAILED DUCKS. April 15, a flight of 34 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS over a Town of Tonawanda yard. Other reports this week - RED-THROATED LOON and COMMON LOON on the Niagara River at Buckhorn Island State Park. Another RED-THROATED LOON at Dunkirk Harbor with 63 CASPIAN TERNS, ICELAND GULL, L. BLACK-B. GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL, HERRING GULL X GLAUCOUS GULL hybrid, and 1400 RED-BR. MERGANSERS. FORSTER'S TERN on Lake Ontario at the Wilson Pier. Two good finds at Amherst State Park - WILSON'S SNIPE and 3 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS. And continued reports of YELLOW-B. SAPSUCKER, NORTHERN FLICKER, EASTERN PHOEBE, BARN SWALLOW, BROWN CREEPER, WINTER WREN, GOLDEN-CR. KINGLET, HERMIT THRUSH, EASTERN TOWHEE, FOX SPARROW, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and COMMON REDPOLLS still at some feeders. The Bird Report will be updated Thursday evening, April 25.
