*Birding Opportunities on the Cameron, Windmill and Bluebird Ranches
on the Carden Alvar*
Volunteers are needed to help conduct point counts on the Cameron and
Windmill Ranches on the Carden Alvar north of Kirkfield. These
counts have been conducted since 2003.
All levels of birding expertise are welcome. We need novice birders
to help with record keeping, intermediate birders who want to upgrade
their skills and expert birders with expert ears to identify the
birds of Alvar by sound and sight.
At this time we are looking for people to fill out teams for June 8,
and also those who may be interested in learning about point counts
while exploring new territory on the Bluebird Ranch on June 15.
The point counts on June 8 start at 6:00. You will be assigned to a
team that will carry out counts at designated locations. The counts
will take up the morning. At this time we need 10 or so volunteers
to help fill out teams.
The event on June 15 will be an introduction to point counts and will
take place on the Bluebird Ranch. Dan Bone will demonstrate how
point counts are carried out and participants will practice calling
out birds as they are heard and/or spotted. The final assignment may
be a practice point count in teams to put what you learn into
place. Dan has space for about 15 volunteers for this, primarily
those who have never done point counts.
If you are interested please contact me with some details about your
birding skill levels and which dates you would be available. If you are
not assigned to a team on June 8 you will be put on the list for the
June 15 counts at the Bluebird Ranch. Please note that these
activities require some moderate to medium level of exercise with
walking between the points and from and to drop off locations.
Count teams will assemble at the Cameron Ranch parking lot at 6:00 am
on June 8 and at the gate to the Bluebird Ranch on Wylie Road at 8:00
am on June 15. Dane Bon will be looking after the June 15 counts and
will contact you.
