The number of migrating shorebirds continues to increase.
 
On the rocks in the Ottawa River Deschenes rapids:

- at dusk on the 28th there were RUDDY TURNSTONE (3), SANDERLING (2 juv), 
SPOTTED SANDPIPER (many) as well as CASPIAN TERN (4+ adult and 1 juv), GREATER 
BLACK-BACKED GULL (2), GREAT EGRET (7+ on Conroy Island) and DOUBLE-CRESTED 
CORMORANT (206+) as well as RING-BILLED (many) and HERRING (few) GULL

- at dusk on the 29th there were SPOTTED, LEAST, SEMIPALMATED and WHITE-RUMPED 
(1) SANDPIPER

- on the 29th and 30th there was LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL (1 first summer)

- on the 30th there were BONAPARTE'S GULL (2+)

 
On mud flats and shallow water from the Shirleys Bay causeway:

- on the 30th there was breeding plumage SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER (1), WILSON'S 
SNIPE (1), SEMIPALMATED PLOVER (5), LESSER YELLOWLEGS (40), SEMIPALMATED (63), 
SOLITARY (3) and SPOTTED (1) SANDPIPER as well as COMMON GALLINULE (1 ad and 2 
juv), COMMON TERN (2), NORTHERN SHOVELER (2), HOODED MERGANSER (2 juv) and 
GREAT EGRET (5)

- on the 28th there was LESSER SCAUP (1 m)

 

On Carp river mud flats and marsh south of Carp (from Rivington St):

- on the 28th there were AMERICAN BITTERN (1), GREEN HERON (1), SORA (1), 
COMMON GALLINULE (1), SEMIPALMATED PLOVER (1), KILLDEER (35), SPOTTED (1), 
SOLITARY (1), SEMIPALMATED (1), LEAST (7), PECTORAL (1) SANDPIPER, GREATER (4) 
and LESSER (25) YELLOWLEGS as well as WILSON'S SNIPE (20+) and CHIMNEY SWIFT (2)

 

At the Almonte lagoon (from the viewing stand):

- reported this week were GREATER YELLOWLEGS (10 on the 24th), LESSER 
YELLOWLEGS, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER (2 on the 25th), LEAST (many), SEMIPALMATED, 
SOLITARY and SPOTTED SANDPIPER as well as KILLDEER (many), GREEN-WINGED TEAL 
(2), BLUE-WINGED TEAL (4) and a BROAD-WINGED HAWK (on the 26th)

 

At the Embrun lagoons:

- on the 29th there were SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, LESSER and GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 
SPOTTED, SEMIPALMATED, LEAST, WHITE-RUMPED (1), BAIRD'S (1 or 2), PECTORAL 
SANDPIPER as well as NORTHERN PINTAIL, RUDDY DUCK, AMERICAN COOT (1), 
PIED-BILLED GREBE, REDHEAD (1 f) and WILSON'S PHALAROPE (1)

 
Interesting sightings:
- CHIMNEY SWIFT (75+) feeding over the Mississippi River at the Pakenham bridge 
on the 20th

- CAROLINA WREN continues to be heard at the west end of Jean Park Rd loop on 
Manotick Island on the 28th
