There has been a little songbird migration this week, a few species from just
north of our area are starting to pass through. Gulls, Great Egrets and Terns
are arriving from just south of our area. The number and varity of migrating
shorebirds continues to increase and the number of juvenile shorebirds has
significantly increased.
At the Ottawa River Deschenes rapids:
- on the 7th there were DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT (250), CASPIAN TERN (10),
GREAT EGRETS (19), LESSER BLACK-BACKED (1 ad and 1 juv) and GREAT BLACK-BACKED
(23) GULL. On the 14th there were RED-NECKED PHALAROPE (2) at the base of the
rapids near the Quebec shore.
On the mud flats and shallow water from the Shirleys Bay causeway:
- on the 9th there were the expected WILSON'S SNIPE, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER,
LESSER and GREATER YELLOWLEGS and LEAST, SEMIPALMATED, SOLITARY and SPOTTED
SANDPIPER as well as SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER (6). In the evening a
WHIP-POOR-WILL called three times from the woods
- on the 11th 60 species were seen in the Shirleys Bay area including a
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER and numbers of YELLOW and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS
along the causeway
- on the 12th there were 12 species of shorebirds including BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVER (1 adult calling constantly), SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER (3 juv) and BAIRD'S
SANDPIPER (2)
- on the 13th there was also WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER (1)
- on the 15th the most interesting shorebird was SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER (1
juv). A MERLIN caught a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER and in the Shirleys Bay woods
there were NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH (1), BLACK-AND-WHITE (many), AMERICAN REDSTART
(many), CHESTNUT-SIDED (1), NASHVILLE, YELLOW, NORTHERN PARULA (1) and
BLACKBURNIAN (1) WARBLER
At the Embrun lagoons:
- on the 11th there were LESSER YELLOWLEGS (8) and SPOTTED (12), LEAST (10),
SEMIPALMATED (8) SANDPIPER as well as RUDDY DUCK, PIED-BILLED GREBE (4), BANK
(240) and TREE (60) SWALLOW and MERLIN (2)
- on the 14th there were also RED-NECKED (3 ad non breeding), WILSON'S (1 juv)
PHALAROPE and PECTORAL (2) and WHITE-RUMPED (1) SANDPIPER
At the Almonte lagoons:
- on the 15th there were LESSER and GREATER YELLOWLEGS, KILLDEER and SOLITARY,
LEAST, SEMIPALMATED, PECTORAL SANDPIPER and SEMIPALMATED PLOVER
At Petrie Island:
- on the 10th and 11th there were RED-EYED and WARBLING VIREO, HOUSE WREN (4),
COMMON YELLOWTHROAT (2), YELLOW, BLACK-AND-WHITE (2), AMERICAN REDSTART,
MAGNOLIA (1), CAPE MAY (1) and CHESTNUT-SIDED (1) WARBLER
Interesting sightings:
- CHIMNEY SWIFT (20+) downtown Ottawa at Isabelle St and O'Connor St on the 9th
- GREAT EGRET (1) flew over the Mississippi River in Carleton Place on the 9th
- NORTHERN PARULA (1) at Britannia Conservation Area on the 12th
- CAROLINA WREN (1) in the Wychwood area of Aylmer on the 15th
