Hi all,
The number of shorebirds has dwindled considerably the last few days, but a
few are around the edge of the first pond to the left and in the back
sprinkler cells among the weeds.
Two Red-necked Phalaropes are still present, but sometimes elusive. This
morning one was at the far edge of the first pond and one swimming in the
middle pond. A Baird's Sandpiper was also at the first pond among several
more common species.
***Please note***
Blenheim Lagoons will be closed to the public sometime in the second week of
September for berm rehabilitation. It is expected to take six weeks.
However, as a gesture of goodwill to the birding community and OFO, it will
be open the weekend of September 28-29 only. As part of the OFO conference,
there is a field trip scheduled for the afternoon of September 29 starting
at 1 p.m.
Please be respectful of construction equipment at that time and latch the
gate behind you!
Ridgetown Lagoons have been productive this summer as well. The south pond
along Mitton Line is good for shorebirds. The last couple of days up to 10
Stilt Sandpipers (there this morning) and two Red-necked Phalaropes have
been present among other species.
At Rondeau Park, a good number of passerines has been present this weekend
as one would expect. Marsh Trail was particularly good this morning with
lots of Blackpoll and Magnolia Warblers among others. A Lincoln's Sparrow
was also seen.
The lake was active this morning with lots of gulls and terns including an
adult Lesser Black-backed Gull off Dog Beach.
Lagoon Directions: Exit 401 at #90 (Communications Rd.) and head into
Blenheim. At the main stoplight turn right (west) onto Rd. 3. Travel about
1.5 km and turn right (north) onto Lagoon Rd. at the carwash, and continue
north about 1 km to gate. You must have an annual permit to enter.

Lagoon Directions: Ridgetown is about 30 minutes east of Chatham. Exit 401
at Rd. 21 (#109) and head south. From the main corner in Ridgetown at Erie
St. and Main St., follow Erie St. north about 1.5 km to Mitton Line/Palmer
St. Turn left onto Mitton Line and go past fertilizer plant. Lagoons are
on the south (left) side and you will see a viewing stand. Do not enter
beyond fence.
