Weather: Gorgeous from start to finish, we couldn't have asked for better conditions. A warming sun and a cooling breeze combined to maintain a pleasant balance throughout the day. And overhead, a nice mix of white and blue aided our spotting greatly. The wind was mostly out of the north, shifting more easterly as the day went on. Raptor Observations: It took a while for birds to get up and moving but when they did there were plenty to be seen. The last three hours of the watch featured our most consistent movement of the season. Bald Eagles and Ospreys were again noticeable but it was the buteos that truly shined. Late in the day, juvenile Red-tailed and Broad-winged hawks were shooting through at a good clip. And not to be outdone, American Kestrels made their first real push of the season. Non-raptor Observations: Common Loon (3), American Golden-Plover (5), Red-breasted Nuthatch (1). Predictions: Mostly sunny with light south wind. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
