Weather: A crummy, overcast morning turned into a bright, clear afternoon, gifting us mostly sunny skies to finish out the watch. Mostly out of the west, the wind was light at first and then strengthened as the day went on. Raptor Observations: Clearing skies sent birds aloft, enriching the afternoon hours. Broad- winged, Sharp-shinned and Cooper's hawks were the big movers but Bald Eagles also had a fine day. Three speedy Merlins were nice enough to provide some blink-and-you'll-miss-it entertainment, each blasting through the viewing area. Non-raptor Observations: Lesser Yellowlegs (1), Black-crowned Night Heron (2), Killdeer (3), Wood Duck (1). Songbird migration continued to be minimal. Some American Redstarts, Nashville Warblers and Cape May Warblers were spotted along the trails. Predictions: Cool temps, partly cloudy skies and strong north winds. If the wind doesn't blow 'em too far south, it should be a good day. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
