This afternoon (October 11) at around 5 p.m. there were two Marbled Godwits and
one Hudsonian Godwit feeding on the usual mudflat at Mitchell's Bay. The two
Marbled Godwits were typically seen close together, but the Hudsonian was
usually by itself a short distance away.
Directions: From Chatham in Chatham-Kent take Hwy 40 north towards Wallaceburg.
About 12 km or so north of Chatham, take Chatham-Kent Road 42 (Electric Line)
west. At Bear Line, jog south for a short distance and then continue west on
C-K Road 42 (Bay Line) to Mitchell's Bay. Drive to the waterfront, and at the
north end of the parking lot on the right, scan the mudflats beside the green
and red channel markers.
The godwits are normally seen on the small mudflats, along with various gulls
and other shorebirds, in this area. There are lots of Great Egrets, and almost
1600 American Coot within viewing distance as well. A spotting scope will be
necessary for a decent view.
