I had the pleasure of spending the majority of my day with Donnie, a fellow Golden-Eagle enthusiast. I also had the pleasure of meeting members Gwen and Dennis, and many families were out enjoying the holiday weekend. A special thank you, to Bob Hall-Brooks for lending his scope to make counting much easier! Many thanks! Weather: A bright and warm sunny day made for a beautiful day on the hawk tower. The fog was thick in the morning but burned off around 10am, leaving clear skies for the remainder of the day. The temperature ranged from 12-24C. The winds were from the NE in the morning changing to S-SE in the afternoon. Raptor Observations: With the beautiful weather brought many raptors very high and to the North of the tower. The joke of the day was, a Hubble telescope could have proved much benefit in counting the many TV dominated kettles. Alas, we had 875 total raptors of 8 species. Non-raptor Observations: Bob Hall-Brooks visited the tower with many banded captures including, Wood Thrush, Ruby Crowned Kinglet, White-throated Sparrow, Black-pole Warbler and a Golden Crowned Kinglet. Many Dragonflies came through, many of them were high in flight and were difficult to identify, I did however count 6 Autumn Meadowhawks. Blue Jays=1023 Monarchs= 20 Predictions: Winds are reported to be from the North in the morning, with an afternoon high of 20C. Some strong gusts of wind might bring hawks in closer, making an easier day for counting. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Bri-Anna Jaksic ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
