Chillier, temperatures reached up into the mid 40s but no higher. The wind was moderate and out of the east and southeast. Raptor Observations: A fun-filled Sunday by the lake, we began with hot and heavy Red-tailed and Red-shouldered hawk action, then experienced a brief midday lull before ending with a Golden Eagle-fueled bang. That midday lull wasn't all bad, though: at approximately 1245, a wayward Black Vulture wandered past, electrifying the onlookers below (yes, vultures can be electrifying). It's one of only a handful of Black Vulture records for LEMP. Not to be overlooked, we had another exceptional Rough-legged Hawk day and our first double-digit Golden Eagle day of the season. At 27 birds counted, it's already been a great season for Rough-legged Hawks and there's still most of a month to go! Non-raptor Observations: American Crow (80000+), Sandhills Crane (4), Herring Gull (10+), Great Egret (7), Cedar Waxwing (30+), American Tree Sparrow (2) Predictions: Overcast, then partly cloudy with highs in the lows 50s and moderate southeast wind. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
