Hi Ontario birders
I have received a few requests from Ontario birders for information on the
situation with the Ross' Gull.
It has been seen every day this week, most of the time in the early morning,
between 7:00 and 8:00 and or in mid-to-late afternoon, from behind Fort
Chambly, or the marina which is next to the Fort.
Wondering where the bird was the rest of the time, a birder went to check the
local sewage lagoons on Wednesday but could not get permission to enter the
lagoons. Somebody else tried the next morning, did not get permission to enter
the lagoons area but was given permission to enter the municipal ground in
front of the lagoons from where he could have a view of the first pond,
standing on a little mount, and he observed the bird on that pond. It was seen
again at that pond to-day.
The location of the lagoons and the municipal ground is in front of number 2417
Boulevard Industriel about 2 kilometres away from the lake and Fort Chambly
from where observations were first made, and are still occasionally made.
The local authorities said that the gate would be opened during business hours
to allow birders to access the ground and look at the first pond (permission is
still denied to enter the lagoons area). While it is hoped that the gate will
be opened during the week-end, it is not clear if it will be. However, birders
have found an alternative way to enter the ground, that is from Boulevard
Industriel, take Boul Franquet (in the West direction), turn left (2nd street)
on Avenue de Gentilly and drive all the way to the South end of Gentilly -
there is a litle park there. Although the ponds are in front, apparently they
cannot be viewed from there, but people can walk in the direction of Boul
Industriel and access the ground from where the first pond can be seen. I do
not know if this access is normally opened to the public.

Good luck if you try for this great bird.

Directions: from Ontario, either from the 401 or the 417, take the new highway
30 and exit at highway 10 that is Autoroute des Cantons de l'Est. Go in the
East direction on highway 10 and exit at Boul Fréchette ; go North on Fréchette
and turn right on Boul Franquet, then right on Boul Industriel. To go to Fort
Chambly, continue on Fréchette to Avenue Bourgogne and turn right on Bourgogne,
or if you are on Industriel, go North, turn left on Boul de Périgny then right
on Fréchette and right on Bourgogne.
