Yes you read the trip itinerary correctly. Peter Hogenbirk, Steve Burrows and I
travelled about 1000 kms. to log 172 species of birds in a 24 hour period from
Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon. Tony Bigg of Peterborough helped out
with the Algonquin and Carden legs. Despite the huge rainstorm last night that
plagued us for the drive south from Algonquin and most of the Carden leg, we
managed to find most of the birds we sought.

Some Highlights:

Algonquin – Spruce Grouse, Olive-sided Flycatcher, White-winged Scoter, Rusty
Blackbird, Boral Chickadee
Carden – Yellow rail at Prospect Marsh, Golden-winged Warbler, Black-billed
Cuckoo, Sedge Wren
Presqu’ile – 2 Red Knots, 5 Brant
Durham – Redhead, Hooded Warbler, Least Bittern, Harlequin Duck

Some misses – Piping Plover and RN Phalarope at Nonquon – almost no shorebirds
when we got there – must have been flushed by something/someone; Loggerhead
Shrike, Yellow-thr. Vireo at Carden due to heavy rain; Blue and Green-winged
Teal – eek! There’s more – with the easy misses and known “good” birds along
the route, we could have handily added 18 species to this total – ah if only
those birds birds knew the good cause they missed being part of.

I’ll send out a full report to my sponsors after a few naps and will do e-bird
reports for the adventure soon.

Thanks to all who helped with logistics and who sponsored me and my team!
