I had great, prolonged looks at the singing Kentucky Warbler in the Parrott’s
Bay C.A. west of Kingston this morning, Monday May 26.
It does seem very territorial, chasing away other small birds from the area.
It was moving around a bit, but stayed about 5 metres up in the deciduous trees
close to the trail, as already described.

As I was walking back I heard a Worm-eating Warbler singing close to the south
side of the trail, only 10-15 metres west of the Kentucky. It then sang from
the north side of the trail though I didn’t see it cross over, then proceeded
to sing almost continuously from within the underbrush close to the trail for
several minutes, a foot or two off the ground, moving slowly eastward towards
me. The song was very loud and distinctive with that rising and falling
cadence you don’t always get to hear. As it neared me I must have moved too
abruptly because the next song came from farther into the woods and then it was
gone. I never did see it.
Worth listening/looking for while enjoying the Kentucky.

I had never been to Parrott’s Bay before and was impressed by the lovely woods
and tremendous amount and diversity of birdsong even as late as 9.30-10.30am.
Directions – thanks to Bruce Ripley:
From the 401 take County Rd. 6 (Exit 599) south to the end. Turn right (west)
and drive 2km until you see Parrott’s Bay C.A. on the north side. Walk the
trail about 50m until you see a trail heading off to the right (east). Take
this trail about another 50 m and you should hear the bird singing. (I never
got to the viewing platform).
Coming from west of Kingston, you could leave the 401 at Exit 593 and go south
to Millhaven, then turn east for about 5km to the C.A. – this could save you
some of the roadwork delays on the eastbound 401 in this area.
