Recent reports to May 29, 2014

The passerine migration slowed in the last week, a few WILSON'S, TENNESSEE, 
BAY-BREASTED and BLACKPOLL WARBLERS continue to be seen. BRANT and ARCTIC TERNS 
have been moving through our area along the Ottawa River. CASPIAN TERN and 
WILSON'S PHALAROPE have arrived and shorebirds continue to be found at the few 
locations that provide appropriate habitat.

A male PRAIRIE WARBLER was reported at Strathcona Park on the 23rd.

A flock of 44 ARCTIC TERNS were seen over the Ottawa River from the Britannia 
Pier at Britannia Park (Lakeside Gardens) on the 25th. Two more were seen at 
that location later in the day and another the next day.

Single OLIVE-SIDED and YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS were briefly seen minutes 
apart in the Fletcher Wildlife Gardens on the 26th.

Flocks up to 200 and single BRANT have been seen on or over the Ottawa River 
since the 26th and up to three CASPIAN TERNS have been seen at a number of 
locations. Single NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD were seen along Carp Rd and along Joy Rd 
south of the golf course.

Rare in the spring a single PURPLE SANDPIPER was seen briefly on the Britannia 
Pier on the 25th. Shorebirds were found at the Embrun and Casselman lagoons and 
on the flooded fields along Brophy Rd east of Moodie Dr. LEAST, SEMIPALMATED 
and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, DUNLIN, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER (1 at Embrun), 
LESSER YELLOWLEGS (very few), SEMIPALMATED and BLACK-BELLIED (Brophy) PLOVER, 
RED-NECKED (female at Embrun) and WILSON'S (male at Embrun and Brophy) 
PHALAROPE.

Interesting sightings: LITTLE GULL (1 1st summer) from the Britannia Pier on 
the 24th, EURASIAN WIGEON (injured male) on the grass at the edge of the Ottawa 
River at the mouth of the Rideau Canal or across the river on the grass south 
of the Museum of History since the 27th and SEDGE WREN (3+) are singing in the 
grassy fields (east of the marsh) north of the bike path and west of the 
intersection of Moodie Dr and Corkstown Rd.
