22 birders attended the field trip on cool, but mostly sunny days. On the first day we started in Hepworth, drove to Sable Beach, Malcolm Bluff, Cape Croker, Isaak Lake, Sky Lake and through grasslands in between.
On the second day we started at the Tobermory Airport, went north to Cape Hurd, then Dorcas Bay (Singing Sands), Lindsay Rd 40, Crane Lake and Dyers Bay Rd. We saw a total of 112 species. We were lucky to find the Brewer's Blackbirds south of Wiarton, there are very few to none in the rest of the Peninsula this year. We had close up looks at Grasshopper Sparrows and Virginia Rails. There were lots of Sandhill Cranes at various locations, Black Terns, Marsh Wrens, Pied Billed Grebe and a Forster's Tern at Sky Lake. Piping Plover at Sable Beach, many American Bitterns, a Peregrine Falcon, Upland Sandpiper, Wilson's Snipe, Clay-colored Sparrow, Purple Finch and 16 Warbler species, which includes a close up look of a Golden-winged Warbler. Other highlights: Great looks at Black Bears crossing the road at two locations. Special thanks to Anthony Vanderheyden and Matthew Vanderheyden (two young keen birders) and Dave Milsom for the assistance in leading this successful outing.
