Observation start time: 08:00:00
Observation end time: 16:00:00
Total observation time: 8 hours
Official Counter: Jennifer Lyon
Observers: Bill Read, Bob Johnstone, Dave Brown, Derek Lyon, Jim Dunn,
Keith Sealy, Mark Cunningham, Mary Carnahan
Visitors:
A ton of visitors today including a group from the Stratford Field
Naturalists and another from Woodstock. Thanks to all the observers for
sticking it out today despite the very slow pace of migration.
Weather:
As predicted the winds were strong from the S and then SW with sand blowing
up over the cliff edge. Typical Peregrine weather as we like to say. Quite
a bit of cloud along with some haze that broke out a bit more as the day
wore on. Temp a bit warmer getting to a high of 21C.
Raptor Observations:
A total of xx birds tallied for the day...and xx of them were Peregrines
(9). Most were seen cruising above and just slightly in from the edge of
the cliff. Other species sailing along the cliff included Osprey (4) and
Kestrels (28)...while the Sharpies (11) and the N. Harriers (3) struggled
along just over the treetops at the north end of the field.
Non-raptor Observations:
A couple of nice Greater Black-backed Gulls cruised past along the cliff.
Not much in the way of passerines showing in the heavy winds...a single
Chimney Swift was noted.
An good find today was a Giant Swallowtail that was photographed just north
of the observation mound in a meadow beside the road.
