Heavy lake fog enshrouded Canada for the first few hours of the watch, which limited visibility early. The wind was light and out of the east. Raptor Observations: Another productive outing today, with a steady stream of raptors flying hastily past. It took until the late morning for the fog to burn off. But once it did, birds were up and active for the duration of the watch. Turkey Vultures are beginning to make their presence felt, slowly wobbling across the channel in larger and larger groups. As for smaller birds, Sharp-shinned Hawks and American Kestrels shined brightest but Northern Harriers continued to assert themselves as well. Not to be forgotten, Bald Eagles are outpacing their record high totals from last year. One never really knows but it's looking increasingly likely we're going to set a new season high for Bald Eagles for the third straight fall. Non-raptor Observations: Blue Jay (6000+) Predictions: Early fog, sunny skies and light southeast wind. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
