Most visitors were from either Michigan or Ontario. Special thanks to Jackie Pozniak, Robert Cameron and Ken Hoffman for staying the day on the tower with me! Weather: Our morning at the tower, was foggy and warm. Winds out of the N until about 10:30am changed eventually to S by noon. Temperatures started at 16.7C at 7am but warmed to 24.5C by 2pm making the day feel more like summer than fall. Skies were partly sunny all day once the morning fog burned off. Raptor Observations: With light winds, and the swing in wind direction early in the day Raptors were few. Sharp-shinned Hawks made up the majority of our migrants today totalling 116. All 3 Falcons were seen with a nice morning show of a Juv Peregrine Falcon hunting a Blue Jay in the marsh. Observers watched the Peregrine separate and then hunt a Blue Jay from a large migrating flock. Lucky for the Jay that the Peregrine was a "beginner" in the hunt -- the Jay made it to cover from the middle of the marsh, and the Peregrine moved on. A total of 9 species of hawks today, no Eagles migrating. Non-raptor Observations: Blue Jays were absolutely the "bird of the day"! Total count for the day-- drum roll please-- 26,260! Special thanks to my "guest" Blue Jay Counter today Robert Cameron, with assistance from Ken Hoffman...Great Job Guys! American Goldfinch were also moving in large numbers today totalling 650. Also notable were 56 Monarchs seen throughout the day. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Cindy Isenhoff ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
