So Im getting a bunch of e-mails about this bird so here are all the details, and also it hasnt been posted to Ontbirds because it is tricky to get to this spot, so I am warning you now, if you try for this and get in a car accident, its your own fault! Don`t hate the player, hate the game son!
Paul Baldassi found this piglet a few days ago and it continues today. I viewed it with Barry Coombs this morning in the company of a few Greater Yellowlegs and a Killdeer. This is a juvenile bird and appears to have a tumor or growth near the vent area. The bird is incessantly preening in that area, suggesting the bird is bother by this growth. Otherwise it can fly quite well and is feeding regularly. The bird is record late for the HSA in terms of fall dates and will now be the latest reported fall Red Knot to E-bird for Ontario, as the previous latest dates were November 5th in 2007, and 1978 respectively. That`s not to say it`s the latest fall date for this species ever in Ontario, but it would sure be getting close. There are only a handful of November records for this species in Ontario overall. So it`s pretty notable. Anyway, from the self appointed center of the universe(Toronto),take the QEW Niagara and after crossing the skyway bridge, you will take the Red Hill Valley Parkway exit. Continue on this road and on your right, you will see an extensive marsh. As the ramp begins to go uphill and turn to the right, this is your que to slow down, turn the 4-ways on, and slowly drive along the shoulder(as to not impede traffic), until very quickly, you will see a gravel road on your right. Turn in here, look into the pond for the Knot. When exiting, its likely going to be tough getting out but wait for a large gap in traffic and blast that gas pedal and you`ll be just fine.
