Visitors:
A few visitors made it up the tower today but didn't stay long. A big thank
you to Marianne Balkwill, Larry Ludwicki, and Jim McCoy for their help and
company on the tower throughout the day.
Weather:
A cloudy day w/ light southwest winds throughout the morning and afternoon.
Temperatures ranged from a low of 5.2C to a high of 8.2C.
Raptor Observations:
A fairly slow day on the tower due to south winds, especially the
afternoon, which had only 1 Red-tailed Hawk in the final 2 hours of the
count. An immature Northern Goshawk flying fairly close to the tower was a
highlight along w/ 8 Northern Harriers. Red-tailed Hawk was the most
abundant raptor w/ 29 birds counted. No falcons or Turkey Vultures were
seen today.
Non-raptor Observations:
A good variety of ducks is still present on the marsh including Gadwall
(second-most abundant), Mallard (most abundant), American Black Duck,
Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, Green-winged Teal, Ring-necked Duck,
Bufflehead and Ruddy Duck. Scaups were seen flying by on the lake and 2
Common Loons were spotted as well. Tundra Swans are flying over in small
numbers. High numbers of American Coots are also present on the marsh.
Many passerines were flying over the tower in the morning hours. By
afternoon, very few birds of any kind were in the air. Highlights included
230 American Crows, 134 Horned Larks, 2 Eastern Bluebirds, 81 American
Robins, 9 American Pipits, 137 Cedar Waxwings, 6 Snow Buntings, 1,360
Red-winged Blackbirds, 40 Purple Finches, 89 Pine Siskins, and a whopping
757 American Goldfinches.

by the afternoon. Likely to see similar results as today.
