Thanks to Jim, Mary, Keith and Ernie for hanging in to get a count done today. Weather: Lots of cloud today and breezy bit with winds from the SSW and SW there wasn't much of a flight at the hawkwatch. Temp was colder starting at 3C and getting to a high of just 5C. Raptor Observations: Mostly TVs (10) and Redtails (13) with singles of Bald Eagle and Cooper's Hawk along with N. Harrier (3) and Sharpies (3). Total of 31 birds for the day. Non-raptor Observations: Observers managed to tally 10 non-raptor species today starting with 2 Common Loons and a Great Blue Heron spotted by Jim. Lots of Canada Geese, Mallards, Tundra Swans and a small flock of Wood Ducks were seen flying between the lake and various ponds in the area and a single Wild Turkey stepped out onto the field. We had the usual species flying back and forth across the field or along the cliff including Ring-billed and Herring Gulls, Mourning Doves, American Crows (no big flocks were seen flying west today), Horned Larks, European Starlings, American Pipits, Red-winged Blacbirds and American Goldfinches. Up and down the road observers also found the usual stuff in the bushes including Hairy, Downy and Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Bluejays, Black-capped Chickadees, White-breasted Nuthatches, American Robins, many, Cedar Waxwings, a Yellow-rumped Warbler, Northern Cardinal, Dark-eyed Junco, Field Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Pine Siskins and Purple Finches. Thanks to Ernie for his contribution to today's "dickie bird" list. Although the butterflies and dragonflies seem to be truly gone for this year, there's always something besides raptors to interest observers such as the 6-point buck that sallied out onto the field just before noon today, then turned and sauntered back into the woods opposite Sharpie Alley. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.on.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
