Wildlife Preservation Canada would like express our gratitude to everyone who was involved in the 2014 Eastern Loggerhead Shrike field season, including Adopt-A-Site volunteers and those who reported your shrike sightings to us through the season. The tireless efforts of our volunteers greatly enhance those of our field staff, and reports are very important for establishing accurate population counts and for determining migration routes.
Fall migration for our shrikes has come and gone, but we still hope for sightings from the south over the winter. If you find yourself travelling through the eastern states, keep your eyes peeled for shrike, especially those with colour bands, and let us know what you find! This year, banded birds received DARK GREEN over SILVER as part of their four-colour band combo. We also released 44 captive-bred birds with geolocators this year, which are banded RED over SILVER on their left leg. Finally, eight young were released with radio tags, and all they carry is a SILVER band on their left leg (but you may be able to see an antenna extending slightly beyond the tail feathers, if you look close enough).
