Periodically, rolling gray clouds brought bands of light snow through, darkening the sky above and whiting out Canada in the distance. Then, we'd alternate back to a pleasing mix of fluffy white clouds and clear blue sky. As for the wind, it was moderate and out of the west all day. Raptor Observations: Whenever the skies cleared and the snow stopped, Red-tailed and Red-shouldered hawks made a break for it. A fairly late American Kestrel was notable but it couldn't top a low and close Golden Eagle as the day's highlight. Non-raptor Observations: Horned Grebe (35+), Common Loon (6), Tundra Swan (30+), Bonaparte's Gull (140+), Hooded Merganser (2), Lesser Scaup (4), Ruddy Duck (3), European Starling (350+), Pine Siskin (60+) Predictions: Much like today, it looks like mostly cloudy skies, cold temps, moderate west wind and a chance of light snow tomorrow. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
