Temperatures never rose above the low 20s and a howling southwest wind never let up, leaving us frosty and wind-beaten by the early afternoon. Raptor Observations: Not much volume but some OK variety and a couple notable highlights helped to take our minds off the cold somewhat. A blink-and-you'll-miss-it Merlin materialized out of nowhere, took a dive at the owl on a pole behind us, scared up a flock of foraging robins and then vanished. A juvenile Peregrine Falcon put on quite the show, crashing into a jumble of Ring-billed Gulls and strafing a raft of waterfowl. And not to be forgotten, a subadult Golden Eagle decided to wander past right overhead, delighting our recently-returned resident photographer. Non-raptor Observations: Common Merganser (14), Red-breasted Merganser (4), Hooded Merganser (6), Gadwall (45+), Redhead (25+), Canvasback (2), Bufflehead (3), Bonaparte's Gull (200+), Killdeer (1), American Robin (20+), Pine Siskin (150+), American Goldfinch (12), European Starling (600+) Predictions: Highs in the low 30s, moderate to strong southwest wind and a 90 percent chance of light snow showers. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
