Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintains records in a 50km radius of MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders already using eBird are encouraged to share their sightings with 'Kingston FN'. Highlights: This has been a rather quiet week with the cold snap keeping birds down and birders in. However, some good sightings have still come. Highlights of the week include; CACKLING GOOSE, TRUMPETER SWAN, SURF SCOTER, RED-NECKED GREBE, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, VESPER SPARROW, and FOX SPARROW. City of Kingston Cataraqui Bay still has a good selection of waterfowl species but numbers continue to decrease, and this week just 49 TUNDRA SWAN were counted. A GREATER YELLOWLEGS was seen there on 14th. Also on 14th, but in the Inner Harbour at Belle Island, 18 GREEN-WINGED TEAL were still present. On 20th, 2 RED-NECKED GREBE were seen off Portsmouth Olympic Harbour. A male SURF SCOTER was seen on 13th in Collin's Bay but didn't make last week's report. On 14th, a late ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen on Lakeland Point Drive, near Lemoine Point CA. 'Tis the season for feeders, and one in Reddendale has been attracting RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS until recently. An AMERICAN PIPIT was seen near Lake Ontario Park on 19th. News just in is of a good candidate for a white GYRFALCON, seen at Lemoine Point CA this morning heading towards Collins Bay - keep those eyes peeled. Wolfe Island No reports this week. Amherst Island Only a couple of reports from the island this week where 2 PIED-BILLED GREBES and 66 TUNDRA SWANS were seen at Martin Edwards Reserve on 15th. ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS now appear to be relatively easy to find, being seen on 15th and on several dates the previous week. Visitors to the island should be aware that the privately owned Owl Woods are closed from Mon 17th Nov - Mon 8th Dec (inclusive) for hunting. Please also note that you must be a member of Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) or be accompanied by a member to access the Martin Edwards Reserve. Other Sightings Five CACKLING GEESE were seen along Bath Road, near Millhaven on 15th. Presumably 2 of the same birds were seen just down the road at Finkle's Shore Park on 17th, with 1 still present there on 18th. At nearby Heritage Point, Bath, an immature GLAUCOUS GUL was seen on 15th; just as unusual was an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL also seen at the same location on 18th. Another LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at Lansdowne on 20th, when 39 HORNED LARK were also counted. A late VESPER SPARROW was photographed near Amherstview Sewage Lagoons on 15th. At Wilton Creek, SE of Napanee, 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS and 3 WILSON'S SNIPE were seen on 17th. The female EVENING GROSBEAK on Washburn Road, north of the city was seen until 15th at least. FOX SPARROW was reported at a feeder near Elginburg also until 15th. A COMMON REDPOLL was at Camden East on 19th and 3 TRUMPETER SWANS were seen at Chaffey's Locks on 20th. In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property, the KFN Executive will no longer be reporting owl sightings via the Internet.
