The channel retained its thick layer of ice and the ground its light dusting of snow. Not nearly as strong today, the wind blustered out of the west early, shifting more southwest late. Raptor Observations: Bald Eagles and Northern Harriers headlined a captivating late November flight. Both species continued their recent strong showings, pushing through the viewing area without delay, particularly during the late afternoon. They were joined by a nice number of Redtails, five Goldens (two of which came right overhead), a Roughleg, three Shoulders and a couple Goshawks, all adding to the flight's overall quality. Non-raptor Observations: Sandhill Crane (18), Tundra Swan (150+), Canada Goose (180+), Horned Grebe (25+), scaup sp. (6000+), American Coot (500+), Gadwall (220+), Canvasback (140+), Ruddy Duck (60+), Bufflehead (4), Common Goldeneye (3), Common Merganser (3), Hooded Merganser (2), Red-breasted Merganser (5), Bonaparte's Gull (70+), Great Blue Heron (8), Killdeer (1), American Crow (3000+), Tree Swallow (2), American Pipit (15+), Horned Lark (2), Pine Siskin (40+) Predictions: Mostly cloudy skies with warmer temps reaching into the low 40s, moderate southwest wind and a 60 percent chance of freezing rain in the morning. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan. The location is at the mouth of the Detroit River as it enters Lake Erie. Directions to site: Lake Erie Metropark: >From I-75, exit at Huron River Drive (exit 27). Continue east on Huron River Drive. Turn left on West Jefferson and proceed a few hundred yards to the entrance of Lake Erie Metropark.
