12 of us from the Pickering Naturalists had a great day from 9:30am until 3:30pm, led by John Stirrat. Starting from McNamee Rd. we travelled north along Wylie Rd., eventually turning around to go back down the very rutted road to go over to Prospect Rd. We ended up with 47 bird species Along Wylie some of the highlights were SANDHILL CRANES, UPLAND SANDPIPERS, COMMON SNIPES, ALDER FLYCATCHER, COMMON RAVENS, SEDGE WRENS, EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, BROWN THRASHERS, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, WARBLING VIREO, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, TOWHEE, SAVANNAH SPARROWS, GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS, BOBOLINKS and EASTERN MEADOWLARKS. There are 3 "active" OSPREY nests along the roadway which traverses the lake. Travelling down Prospect Rd. we saw a SWAMP SPARROW, a male NORTHERN HARRIER warding off 2 Blackbirds, and a MARSH WREN, along with 7 species of Dragonflies and several Butterfly species. We were most fortunate to have eluded any major rainstorm.
