Shining through a partly cloudy sky, the sun offset cool early temperatures. But by the day's end, an endless expanse of gray clouds blotted out any hope of warmth, sending us in search of additional layers. More boisterous as the day progressed, the wind was moderate and out of the northwest. Raptor Observations: Broad-winged Hawks built on their recent streak, kicking it up a notch today. A late day surge of activity brought us our first thousand-strong streams of the season. In addition to the broadwings, Sharp-shinned Hawk were a constant presence. Rare was the moment without a sharpie in view. Non-raptor Observations: Common Loon (3), Wood Duck (1), Forster's Tern (6), Caspian Tern (5), Canada Goose (70+), Chimney Swift (15+), Ruby-throated Hummingbird (7), Black Saddlebags (1), Common Green Darner (4), Monarch (44) Predictions: Mostly sunny with mild temps and moderate wind out of the west and northwest. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
