We had a full deck of visitors most of the day. For some this was their first time to HawkFest, others were old frineds. This is the perfect time to visit if you haven't been since there will be plenty of people to help identify the migrating birds. Weather: The morning dawned bright and sunny with temperatures starting out at 13.6C, reaching a high of 18.4C in late afternoon. Cloud cover was sparce for the first 3 or 4 hours but then started to build late in the day until it almost looked as if we would get a down pour. Our winds were from the N or NW all day at times gusting to 26 kph, and most times steady at 15+ kph. It really felt like fall has arrived, and the birds seemed to think so too. Raptor Observations: We had our first "big raptor day" of the season--perfect timing for our HawkFest! We had 10 species of raptors today with Broad-winged Hawks making the first big number appearance of the season. We had all 3 falcons come thru today with the American Kestrels still moving in large numbers. Non-raptor Observations: Many ducks in the marsh including: Mallards, Wood Duck, American Black Duck, Blue-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler. Also seen this morning in the marsh were Doulbe-crested Cormorants, Common Gallinule, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Green Heron and American Coot. Ruby-throated Hummingbirds were moving thru along with large numbers of Cedar Waxwings. Predictions: Sundays is going to be another spectacular day! Clear skies, sunny with North winds and mild temperatures! Come join us at the festival! ======================================================================== Report submitted by Cindy Isenhoff ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
