Weather: It was beautiful weather with temperatures up to 26C, a bit of cloud cover, and a slight breeze. The breeze was, however, from the S and SW. Raptor Observations: The wind direction didn't do us any favours again today, with 25 birds of 3 species migrating: Northern Harrier, Sharp-shinned Hawk, and American Kestrel. All the birds did fly nice and close to the tower though, so when one came by, it was a good look! A Merlin also shot by the tower in the morning, but went straight back again and didn't migrate. Non-raptor Observations: The skies above the marsh were filled in the afternoon with 100+ Tree Swallows, but there was not many birds migrating. 13 Killdeer, 2 Chimney Swifts, 12 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, 8 Blue Jays, 13 Cedar Waxwings, and 107 American Goldfinches were seen through the day. With the lack of avian activity, there was plenty of time to count Monarch butterflies and 131 were seen passing the tower! Also dragonflies: 2 Twelve-spotted Skimmers, 19 Black Saddlebags, 2 Common Green Darners. See today's eBird list for all species http://ebird.org/ebird/canada/view/checklist?subID=S25048276 Predictions: Sunny and warm tomorrow with south winds continuing all day. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jenna McDermott ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
