Observation end time: 15:00:00
Total observation time: 8 hours
Official Counter: Jennifer Lyon
Observers: Clive Hodder, Derek Lyon, Jim Dunn, Keith Sealy,
Mary Carnahan, Tom Stewart
Visitors:
Thanks to all the observers and counters for today's report...Jen & Derek,
Keith S., Jim D., Clive H., Tom Stewart, Sally, Mary C. and Shirley from
Orillia. IT was good to see about 20 other visitors at the hawkwatch today
as well.
Weather:
Winds continued to blow from a predominantly southerly direction for the
day and temps were even warmer to a high of 25C. Very little cloud cover
for the count period.
Raptor Observations:
Despite the very hot weather there was a steady flow of hawks throughout
the day and total birds tallied was 197. Near mid-day a Cooper's hawk
zipped across the field and landed in a tree to the north of the mound
giving great views for the counters and visitors for about 10 minutes.
Later that day, we had a Sharpie do the exact same thing landing almost on
the same branch. Very cool! The 4 Broadwings were seen very far in the
north circling near a bald eagle.
Non-raptor Observations:
Pileated WP, Canada Warbler, Gray Catbird, Ovenbird, RT Hummingbirds,
HOODED WARBLER ***1ST OF THE SEASON, American Golden Plover, The Hooded
warbler was seen from the road a little north of the counters on the west
side. The single Golden Plover flew westward along the cliff near noon.
Other species included Red-bellied WP, Chimney Swifts, N. Flicker, Gray
cheeked Thrush, Swainson's Thrush, Philadelphia Vireo, Cedar Waxwings
47 Monarchs counted from the mound
Saddlebags (tons)
Green darners (tons)
Cabbage white
Red Admiral
Predictions:
More of the same.
